About

Who writes German Immigration and what the site is for.

German Immigration is a practical guide for tech workers living in Germany. I write about the parts of the system that are hardest to figure out when you don't speak German yet: the visa process, the Blue Card, the Chancenkarte, the Arbeitsagentur, Anmeldung, Steuererklärung, and what to do when a layoff puts your visa on a three-month timer.

Who writes this

John. Engineer living in Germany. I've spent years learning this system the hard way, filing the forms, making the appointments, paying the fees, fixing the mistakes. The posts here are written the way I'd explain it to a colleague moving here next month.

What makes this site different

Three things.

First, it's written for tech workers specifically. The economics, the visa categories (Blue Card, Chancenkarte, Jobsuchvisum), the industries, the tax situations. Not a generic expat site.

Second, it takes job loss and visa cliffs seriously. The 2024-2026 tech layoff cycle left a lot of Blue Card holders scrambling. There is a three-month grace period in §18b, an ALG I option, a freelance visa route, a Niederlassungserlaubnis shortcut. This is content nobody else is writing well in English, and it is exactly when people need it most.

Third, it assumes you use AI tools. ChatGPT, Claude, DeepL, and the rest are part of the modern expat stack. A lot of posts here show exactly how to use them to handle German paperwork, translate official letters, draft a Kündigung, or prep for a job interview without sounding like a robot.

A note on accuracy

Immigration, tax, and visa rules change. Every post links directly to the official source (BAMF, Auswärtiges Amt, Bundesagentur für Arbeit, Destatis, Make it in Germany) and shows a "last updated" date. I am not a lawyer, a tax advisor, or a Steuerberater. For binding advice on your specific situation, talk to someone who is. For getting your head around how the system works so you can ask the right questions, start here.
